Review:

El Ahorcado contacted me a while ago to check out their S/T debut album. The album cover intrigued me. It's a desolate, bleak and almost violent piece without giving to much away. I listened to a couple of tracks and then my interest went into overdrive. I am a huge fan of the Mexican Doom/Sludge/Stoner Metal Scene and a few of my friends from Mexico told me these guys are one of the heaviest and loudest Sludge/Stoner Metal bands that Mexico has to offer.

With that endorsement ringing in my ears I then proceeded to listen to the album fully for the very first time. All 72 minutes of it. So what did I truly experience after those 72 minutes. I experienced an epic journey told through heavy amplifier worship as El Ahorcado put my body through a gruelling and punishing audio workout that left me a shivering wreck.

El Ahorcado combine Sludge Metal, Doom Metal, Stoner Metal with a dark bleak satanic outlook on life. It's not exactly Black Metal though the vocals have a slight Death Metal growl at times. This album is Dopesmoker's devil worshipping demonic riff slaying evil crazy high as a fucking kite little brother.

El Ahorcado leave no stone unturned playing epic riffs powered by the mighty weed. As their bio states, this band is influenced by Get High, Rock N' Roll and Satan Worhsipping. That's the perfect description for this album as it's crazy hazed drug-fuelled ride that may take some poor losers souls along the way. But what a great journey you will have.

Tracks such as Funeral Wind, The End Of It All, Doomed Ablaze and Las Brujas – show a band influenced by classic bands such as Sabbath, Kyuss, Sleep and High On Fire but still bringing their own unique style to the world. You will need to give this album your full attention as it has a lot of different ideas running through it's epic 72 minute run-time.

One of the albums bleakest tracks is – A New Dusk. A heavy and hazy nightmarish journey into the dark wastelands that sees the band play some of the best riffs on the album with intense vocals to match. Are these guys worshipping Satan. It's hard to tell but that what makes this album such an experience to listen to. As this is not your conventional Sludge/Stoner Metal album. It's a bleak as fuck experience that actually may put some people off.

El Ahorcado will put your body through one final heavy as hell endurance challenge with the 18 minute plus track - El Ahorcado. A slow burning experience that sees the band unleashing hell on earth as their musical creativity knows no bounds as the constant onslaught of drone based riffs even had me feeling nauseous at times.

So what have El Ahorcado delivered here. Quite possibly one of the bleakest and depressing Sludge/Stoner Metal albums of 2014. It's a dangerous album that will leave you feeling very uncomfortable with the world around you. And I loved every fucking second of it.

Brilliant Stuff.
